Japan and Australia have had these for ages. In the picture below you can
see that some of the older stations actually use old-fashioned moving physical
digits and letters, such as were in digital alarm clock in the 60's and 70's
before LEDs. In Australia/New Zealand, brightly burning LEDs already allow
you to walk to a bus stop and recognize from a distance that there is time
to step into a store for a few minutes as the bus not quite there. This works
with a transponder on the bus giving off a unique signal based on its current
location. (Location self-determination is already available in most buses
and does not require GPS, typically the driver aligns an announcement tape
with the current station, and is able to briefly delay the tape if he lags
behind).
